5 fruit and vegetables to boost your eye health
You may have seen on my Instagram stories, I've discovered I have a meat allergy and am trialling a pescatarian diet to see whether I feel any better... I'm eating more consciously and have been spending a lot of time analysing my diet and making sure I'm eating nutrient rich foods to help my body.
Eye health is something that I haven't really thought about for a while but it's so important! Did you know that there are foods that help boost your eye health? No neither did I!! Leightons Opticians & Hearing Care have been sharing with me the best foods to eat to keep my baby blues healthy - and below are my favourite five from the fruit and vegetables category:
Who doesn't love an avocado?? Well, now there's even more excuses to eat them! Avocados are packed with lutein and zeaxanthin - which help decrease the risk of cataracts. Now, you've just got to find a perfectly ripe one..
Berries such as blueberries and blackcurrants are filled with antioxidants and studies show that eating them could help save your vision if you’re affected by normal tension glaucoma!
Citrus fruits - such as oranges or grapefruit - are rich in Vitamin C, which boosts your immune system. This is definitely something that I need to integrate into my life more, as I don't each a lot of citrus, but even a glass of OJ would be beneficial.
I love a bit of spinach (as does Popeye!) and love popping a bit of it in a vegetable curry, or mixed in with some pasta. Research has shown that there's enough lutein in half a cup of spinach a day to help prevent vision loss caused by advanced age-related macular degeneration.
Peppers are so easy to cook with - whether you're putting them in a fajita, or even just nibbling on them with some hummus! Red and yellow peppers are high in both alpha-carotene and beta-carotene, which the body transforms them to vitamin A. Perfect for keeping your eyes healthy!
Make sure you pop some of these in your diet and regularly get your eyes tested - the world is such a beautiful place, we need to take care of our eyes so we can see it!
